Network printing reduces the cost
of printing in the office by reducing the amount of printing related hardware that is
purchased. In the past, when a computer was purchased for a user, it was a generally
accepted fact that a printer would be purchased for the user as well. Personal laser
printers can generally cost anywhere from $600 to an excess of $1000. Purchasing printers
for a group of 25 can be an extremely costly endeavor. By using network printing, the same
group of 25 could share one high volume printer attached to the network at a cost ranging
from approximately $1500 to $5000 depending on the speed and the features of the printer.
Larger volume printers come with a variety of options that include multiple output trays
similar to large copiers and individual secure printer output mailboxes for situations
where confidential information might need to be printed. With the savings from network
printing, color laser printing can be added to the network starting at approximately
$2500. At such a low cost, color laser printing is becoming a common resource in even
small organizations.
Network Faxing reduces the cost of
operating an office and improves efficiency at the same time. By receiving faxes and
delivering them to the desktop via the network and sending faxes directly from the
application that generated the document, the efficiency of the office employee is
increased by reducing the trips that an employee would make to the fax machine each day.
The same efficiency increasing operations also save money by reducing the number of faxed
pages that are printed due to the fact that faxes can be viewed on line and shared among
multiple users just by forwarding the fax to additional users through the network. At a
cost ranging from 5 to 7 cents per page received and printed by a traditional fax machine
or printed by a laser printer then transmitted by fax, the savings incurred by the use of
network faxing quickly add up and pay for the implementation of network faxing in a
relatively short time.
